It starts with the core

We think it’s important that pupils learn and practise core mental health skills to cope with adversity and prevent young people from reaching a crisis point. We encourage teachers to start with these four core lessons before moving on to additional topics.

What's at the core?

The four core lessons of the programme are:

  • Relaxation, resilience and visualisation

  • Breathing and other coping strategies

  • Inner safe place

  • Understanding emotions

What's included?

  • Lesson PowerPoint

Four ready to go, structured and well-resourced lessons with a variety of mental health strategies. All contained in one PowerPoint for ease of access.

  • Guided audio-tracks

A series of audio-tracks adapted from our NHS-approved adult app: 'The Feeling Good App'

  • Pupil Booklet

Pupils can work through a downloadable, printable booklet as the lesson is taught so that they can record their thoughts and reflections.

  • Class discussions

Pupils can take part in discussions, as a class or in pairs or small groups. Teachers and pupils have both reported that these class discussions are unique, engaging and a way for the class to understand each other better.

What will pupils learn?

  • What wellbeing is

  • What resilience is and how we can learn to become more resilient ourselves

  • About the relationship between mental and physical health

  • How athletes use visualisation, alongside practice, to achieve their goals and how this relates to our lives

  • What mindfulness is and how it can help us to feel calmer and more relaxed; how to use breathing and other techniques to help us to manage stress and feel more relaxed

  • How to identify and talk about emotions

  • How to use gratitude to feel more positive

Evidence behind the programme?

Over many years we have researched Feeling Good for Schools. We've found it's particularly beneficial for pupils who struggle with wellbeing and need it the most.
